Wither the Humanities?

There is yet another article in yesterday's paper about the diminution of interest in studying the humanities, and I juxtapose that with the interview of Neil Gaiman on the radio this morning.   What will the world have lost and gained with the focus on STEM fields and away from philosophy, history, and the arts in higher education?

Here's the newspaper

And the radio interview

I would like to be able to take comfort with the thought  that we may  be returning to a world in which only the independently wealthy can afford to support the high cultural arts.  But that does not appear to be the case either.   Do the humanities fight back or succumb to the pressure and become relevant in a shallow, sound-bite world?

Thoughts?
Actions?
Contrary evidence?
